Residential Architecture

A home that quietly shares time with its garden

This residence, located on Okinawa’s main island, began as a rebuilding project in response to the wish of the owner, an entrepreneur, and his family to create a home “where hosts and guests could peacefully share time together.”

In planning the project, they chose to inherit the existing garden, which had been carefully cultivated over many years, not simply as an exterior spacebut as time itself, engraved upon the site.

From this garden, the direction of the architecturewas naturally guided. By carefully reading the garden’s existing landscape and the paths of the wind, the rock garden, deck terrace, and rooftop terrace were layered three-dimensionally, creating a composition that gently connects interior and exterior even within the city.

The existing garden is positioned as a place that softly welcomes visitors, like the Asatina (front garden) of traditional Okinawan houses. Deep eaves soften the strong sunlight, while shifting shadows and natural ventilation bring gentle coolness without relying solely on air-conditioning.

Openings scattered throughout the house are arranged to read the flow of the breeze, allowing one to sense subtle changes in light and temperature as the body moves through the space.

We believe that lasting beauty is created when architecture quietly accepts the natural order that originally existed within the place.

The form, circulation, and selection of materials are guided by a balance between “openness to the garden and nature” and “the reduction of environmental load.”
Natural materials rich in shadow, wall compositions that gently release heat, and layouts that capture the breeze following the wisdom of traditional houses—each element sublimates the spirit of learning from the past into the present, achieving both passive environmental performance and a deep architectural experience.

In this house where hosts and guests share time, the very act of hospitality becomes the architectural theme.
Just as traditional Okinawan homes once welcomed honored guests through their gardens, the history, light, and breeze of the host felt at the moment one steps into the courtyard inherit the “welcoming spirit” cherished in old Okinawan houses and carry it into the present. We value an architecture that lives with nature, offering comfort that will be gently handed down into the future.
